Equine Therapy

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy for Drug Rehab and Alcohol Recovery is a team effort learning between a licensed therapist and a horse professional working together with people to create a healthier way of living. EAP and EAL is a powerful and effective therapeutic approach that has a tremendous impact on individuals, youth, families, and groups. It focuses on a variety of mental health and human development needs which include: Behavioral issues, substance abuse, anxiety, relationship problems, depression, abuse, eating disorders, communication, and thinking errors. It also helps build problem solving, leadership skills, self esteem, attitude, and working well with others.Equine 42 225x300 Equine Therapy

Interacting with horses creates an open environment for the client to see firsthand the behaviors there experiencing in life through the horses behaviors. The horses essentially “Mirror” the clients behaviors. These different areas are addressed through activities with the horses, and then brought together to create analogies and metaphors to relate to the clients life.

"Why horses?”

Equine 22 300x296 Equine TherapyHorses are large and powerful, which creates a natural opportunity for most people to overcome fear and develop confidence. The size and power of a horse can be naturally intimidating to many people.

Accomplishing a task involving a horse, in spite of any fears, creates confidence and provides an opportunity for the use of some powerful metaphors when dealing with other intimidating and challenging situations in life. Horses are very much like humans in that they are social animals.

Horses have defined roles within their herds, just as we do within our own groups of individual people. They would rather be with their peers doing what they want to do, just like us. Horses have distinct personalities, — just as we do.

An approach that seems to work with one horse, does not necessarily work with another. At times, they seem stubborn and defiant. They like to have fun. In other words, horses provide vast opportunities for metaphorical learning.
